How to make up your baby safely

Who said that putting on makeup is an activity exclusively for adults? In recent decades there are more and more occasions when children use make-up: Carnival, Halloween, birthdays and parties. It is a phenomenon in constant growth, which however requires particular attention towards the products used, which must not in any way cause damage to the skin of children. In short, the tricks for children need a security much greater than the one you have for looking for tricks for you who are an adult. So, how to make up your baby safely …

Here is a selection of really safe tricks for your baby …

The choice of hypoallergenic tricks

Unfortunately there are many products on the market and it is rather complicated to move towards a healthy and safe choice.

If you want to be sure you’ve opted for a trick that puts your baby’s skin at risk as little as possible, you need to make sure it’s a certified, tested product that is expressly indicated for use on your skin or nails (in the case enamels) of children.

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration), a US agency operating for the health protection department, has identified several import products responsible for different dermatological diseases in children. Many brands, in fact, insert into their tricks elements that are prohibited because they are considered harmful to the skin health of children and others. For this reason we advise you to direct your choice towards 100% natural products

In order to do this it is advisable to carefully check the make-up composition before buying it, ensuring that the dyes are of vegetable or food origin and that they have been tested to verify that they do not cause allergies to children.

Generally the most used and safest products are water based. However, we also recommend colored sticks often used to make carnival or Halloween masks.

How can I tell if a children’s make-up is of natural origin?

Although the word ‘hypoallergenic’ is often used on children’s play tricks, this is not enough to determine the quality of the product and its natural origin.

Therefore, to avoid falling into error, make sure that the following product is not present in the product:

  • Substances deriving from the processing of petroleum, for example liquid paraffin, petrolatum, mineral oils and others.
  • Watch out for silicones. It is now known that the silicones present in most cosmetic products are harmful to the skin, causing dryness and irritation of various kinds.
  • PEG, also in this case, these are elements deriving from the processing of oil and are highly harmful to the skin, because they cause alterations and irritations that often require the intervention of the dermatologist.
  • Alcohol-based fragrances. For some years on the majority of children’s skin care product packages (cream, cleansing milk, ointment, shampoo and soap) the concentration of perfumes and alcohol is indicated, equal to 0%. This is because, until recently, the alcohol contained in the perfumes was the main cause of dermatitis, redness and allergies of the skin of newborns and children up to 3 years.

So you will find yourself having to choose the best cosmetic products for your daughter’s skin, opting for non-toxic, organic and hypoallergenic make-up. To be sure you are not wrong, here are some simple rules to follow …

  • Choose products that contain vegetable oils and waxes, which are dermatologically tested;
  • Choose colors in paste and pencils with double tip of different shades;
  • Choose tricks with the indication ‘bio’ for children;
  • Choose a colored mineral powder, which combined with an organic cream and rice starch is the perfect emblem of do-it-yourself makeup;
  • Obtain a bi-phasic organic makeup remover for delicate skin, to be able to remove make-up at the end of the day.

Choosing a non-toxic and organic make-up is essential for having fun without causing damage to the skin, but having found a healthy product should not lead you to believe that it can be used too often.

Furthermore, if the child or child suffers from atopic dermatitis or some other type of dermatological disorder, it is appropriate to avoid using these products and apply only creams and detergents indicated by the pediatrician.

Tricks unknown at birthday parties

It is not easy to protect him from everything, especially when he sees his peers having fun doing an activity that could be dangerous for your child. In the case of makeup, having a skin that is too sensitive or prone to allergic reactions is the first major obstacle.

But how do you explain to your child, who is attending a birthday party, who can’t make up the tiger’s face or the color he wants?

Children always look at the end result and the happiness of others is always something to aspire to, so even if there is a risk of allergies or skin irritation, they don’t care.

In this case, the advice we give you is to ask for information on the products that the animator / make-up artist uses. We already anticipate that, in most cases, they will simply tell you that they are water based, hypoallergenic without being able to provide you with any other specific information, also because on the product packaging there is almost always nothing written about the composition.

So what to do? To prevent your child from participating in the fun or pretending nothing in the name of happiness?

The choice to make is not at all simple, especially when you have some doubts or when you think that your baby’s skin is too delicate to be covered with a product of which almost nothing is known. In this case, however, the best thing is to ask the animator / make-up artist to use soft colors (no black, red and blue that contain more allergens) and to avoid coloring the whole face: a couple of hearts on one cheek or little flowers are enough to make your child super happy and it is the right compromise to avoid irritation or allergies, without eliminating the fun.

If, on the other hand, the tricks used do not inspire confidence, you can always try a small test, making a very small drawing on the palm of the hand or on the face and waiting 30 minutes to check that there are no allergic reactions. If everything went the right way, you can ask the make-up artist to proceed with other drawings.

At the end of the event, never forget to remove your baby’s face. If you do not have a specific product that is suitable for your child’s skin, a little water and soap should be enough to eliminate all traces of make-up. It is important to remember not to rub the skin too much because even if the tricks are really water based, they will go away very easily.
